Tip #5: HITTING IRONS OUT OF THE ROUGH

A common mistake that I see with high handicappers hitting from thick rough is they don’t use a club that has enough loft and they don’t change their swing plane. If the green is not reachable, try these few ideas.

A. Use a club that has enough loft to get under the ball (7 or 8 iron).

B. Open the face slightly. The reason for this is because when hitting out of the rough, the club should make contact to the grass first, thus closing the clubface at impact.

C. Make your backswing more upright. To do this, hinge your wrists earlier and lift the club more on an upright plane. This will help to get the club head into the grass and under the ball.

D. Remember to stay in your spine angle. Coming up out of your posture will cause you to top the ball.

Tip #3: Chip like a pro
